Mount
Vesuvius
had
last
erupted
so
long
ago
that
everyone
had
forgotten
its
dangers.
The
people
were
used
to
the
earth
shaking
and,
only
fifteen
years
before,
a
major
earthquake
struck
Pompeii
and
Herculaneum.
By
79
AD,
the
towns
had
been
somewhat
repaired.
The
rich
soil
around
Vesuvius
was
excellent
for
growing
fruit
and
vegetables,
making
it
a
popular
place
to
live.
