In
less
than
a
few
seconds
the
people
were
killed
by
thermal
shock:
the
temperature,
up
to
700°
C,
was
enough
to
boil
their
blood
and
brains,
causing,
in
some
cases,
their
skulls
to
burst.
In
minutes
their
flesh
would
have
been
destroyed
by
the
heat
leaving
only
skeletons.
By
the
time
the
volcanic
ash
and
pumice
cooled,
Herculaneum
was
buried
under
20
metres
of
solid
rock.
