The
story
of
Herculaneum
is
that
the
town
was
found
in
1709
by
a
farmer
digging
a
well
and
finding
marble.
The
fact
that
a
new
settlement
lay
over
that
area,
and
that
the
volcanic
ash
had
turned
into
such
hard
rock,
made
it
very
difficult
to
get
into
the
buried
town.
Whatever,
treasure
hunters
began
digging
and
tunnelling
into
Herculaneum
in
search
of
valuable
artefacts
and
works
of
art.
Imagine
how
keen
you
would
have
to
be
to
dig
and
tunnel
for
these
treasures!
